1. Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White. Hands down, my favorite book ever.
2. Stuart Little, again, by Mr. White
3. The Black Stallion, by Walter Farley because who doesn’t go through a horse phase?
4. Strawberry Girl, by Lois Lenski
5. Cherry Ames Series, by Helen Wells. Cherry was a nurse and went on grand adventures. Oh, how I wanted to be like her, but then I got to high school and Chemistry kicked my patootie. This series is way out of print, but I stumbled upon them at a flea market a couple of years ago and it was as though I had found the Holy Grail. My husband thought I had lost my mind when I started to cry.
6. The Velveteen Rabbit, by Margery Williams.
7. The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis – again, another series and violating the letter of the 10 list law, because I now have more than ten on the list, but they must be on here.
8. Pippi Longstocking, by Astrid Lindgren
9. Are you there, God? It’s me, Margaret, by Judy Blume.
10. Where the Sidewalk Ends, by Shel Silverstein.
Now I want to go to the library. And cancel the cable guy who’s coming to install new channels….

Oh my word! I loved Strawberry Girl! I think I went through a “Lois Lenski” phase–did you ever read “Cotton in my Sack” about the girl who picked cotton? I remember doing a book report on it. That’s a great book list. Thanks for sharing!
Those are great choices! I never read Cherry Ames, but I did stumble upon a stash of Trixie Belden books a few years ago in a used bookstore and had the same reaction you did. And yes, my husband thought I was crazy too.

Lurve Lois, but you stopped my heart when you wrote about CHERRY AMES! Oh, man, you bring me back to the summer after my 4th grade year. I stayed with my friend’s grandparents for a couple of weeks (with her, of course) in this bitty town called McLean TX. I remember they had a public library, and I tore thru my fill of CA, Student Nurse, Army Nurse, etc.
I knew you were good people.

I’m loving re-reading a lot of these now that Blake’s reading chapter books. I’m also getting to read books that I missed the first time around. My mom used to LOVE Cherry Ames, but I don’t know that I’ve ever read that series. This was fun, Sus!
By the way, have you ever heard the audio recording of Charlotte’s Web, read by E.B. White? The man may have been a writer but his reading aloudability left a lot to be desired. My friend Alison and I used to beg her mom to bring home that record from the library and we would make ourselves sick from laughing when he’d read, “Do. away. with. it. shrieked. Fern. You. mean. kill. it?” Guess you’d have to hear it to know just how truly funny that was.

My girls and I read Charlotte’s Web as our first chapter book read-aloud together. I’ve not ever read Strawberry Girl although I just look at it at the library today … may have to pop it in my bag for the next time!
great list! just reread the narnia series a few years ago, and it totally stood the test of time!
