Notwithstanding my fondness for spas, purses, and pedicures, I would never be accused of being a real girly-girl. I’m very comfortable in shorts, tennies and a t-shirt, minimal make-up and hair thrown back in a ponytail. But as I was telling Whimzie, I’m not 20 and running fifteen minutes late to Intro to Music class anymore, so maybe it’s time to raise the personal appearance bar. Hence the mascara and my latest purchase, a flat iron.
I was a little nervous to use the flat iron at first. It may or may not have had something to do with the fact that the lady at Sally told me to use thermal spray protectant on my hair prior to using it and on the back of the bottle in big bold letters it said COMBUSTIBLE and it made me a little nervous to be using flammable materials on my head in conjunction with an instrument that heated to 450 degrees.
Things that make you go “hmmmmm” and grab the fire extinguisher.
Just in case.
I asked Whimzie what to do because she is the queen of all things hair related (she had TWO sets of hot rollers back in the day) and I think she was a little nervous for me because she sent me three or four IM’s about what to do and not do when I tried it for the first time.
She knows when to be appropriately alarmed. She saw the results of many a bad encounter with a curling iron in college. I think at one point she considered just taking it away from me altogether.
I was clearly an amateur.
I think I managed to use the flat iron somewhat appropriately because Mr. CPQ was appreciative of the results and let’s just be honest, anything that remotely resembles effort is better than my usual look.
Now if I can just work on the wardrobe and make-up a little…..

One of my bloggy buddies practically had to walk me through using a flat iron for the first time. Now, I really like it! It takes a terrible hair day and makes it look all professional with very little effort. It’s rather amazing! My daughter still comments on how I forget to do the back, though. 🙂 Best of luck to you! I had to use hot rollers back in the day because I’ve never been able to use a curling iron. I got tired of trying to explain that those were curling iron burns, not hickies, on my neck.

Kudos to you – I don’t have the patience to flat iron my hair any more. You’ve seen all my curls – can you imagine how long it takes me to straighten it? PS – I have a miracle smoothing cream I use when I do straighten my hair. It’s BedHead After-Party Smoothing Cream. It does wonders, I promise you!
Very cute! I’ve used it all but now have a cut that I mostly manage with blow dryer and round brush. I have daughters who are a wealth of information and help. And sometimes fairly blunt opinion as in, “Mom! What is up with your hair???”
Looks GREAT! I’ve had a Chi for 8 years (I burned through one and am on my second) and it one appliance I cannot live without. It ranks higher than the coffee maker or the dishwasher. Seriously.
You’ll get the hang of it in no time and wonder how you ever lived without it!

super cute!!! i tried a straight iron one time and had marks all over from where I started the iron. not a good look. kind of like panty lines. anyway, maybe I should try it again. i’m sure it would get rid of this frizzy hair from the 98 degree swimming pool I walk around in all day, aka Chicago summer.

You are a brave woman. I was the girl who insisted on perming her hair just so it would feather correctly. I had super straight hair and desperately wanted curly…A very wise (and big lipped) man once said “You can’t always get what you want”

You look fabulous – I wish sometimes I had the problem of needing to use one of those fandangle things but alas I was never blessed with curls of the natural kind. Now that I’m nearly all grey, it’s less likely to want to even bend to a hot curler – terrific you have the choice. Blessings!

I think you look fabulous! But I’m a little bumfuzzled about the fact that maybe I shouldn’t be running around town looking like I’m 3 days late for a shower and equally as late for an 8:00 class. Please don’t tell me that I have to start looking cute just to go buy milk…because I don’t understand that kind of talky.
Looks lovely! I’ve recently decided to start straightening mine on a regular basis. I have really curly hair so it’s a chore. My problem is the short hair at the very back of my head. I keep burning my neck. Those buggers are hot!
Oh, I need lessons in the flat iron. Can’t seem to get the ends to keep from sticking out.
